Founded by the Bourbon kings to house both the Farnese inheritance and the flood of finds from Pompeii and Herculaneum, the museum made Naples the antiquities capital of Europe before Rome reclaimed the title.

  • Go after Pompeii or Herculaneum, not instead. The sites give you the streets; the museum gives you everything that was carried out of them, and the order makes both land harder.
  • Find the Alexander Mosaic. A floor from one Pompeii house, a million-plus tiles, and the most famous face of Alexander the Great in existence.
  • Do not skip the Farnese Bull. The largest sculpture to survive from antiquity, carved from a single block, and the room it commands is worth the visit alone.
