Entrances hide in plain sight off the old city's lanes
Forty meters below the pizza ovens lies the other Naples — Greek quarry chambers, Roman aqueduct tunnels you sidle through by candlelight, and WWII shelters with children's toys still on the cots. The city's basement is 2,400 years deep.
Greeks cut the tuff for the walls above; Romans threaded aqueducts through the voids; centuries of Neapolitans used the cisterns until an 1885 cholera epidemic closed them — then 1943's bombs sent the city back down to shelter in its own past.
An estimated two million cubic meters of cavities honeycomb the city — one reason Naples' traffic can't dig deeper metro lines fast. The 'Piazza Cavour' metro station displays Greek walls found during excavation; in Naples, you can't dig without discovering.
