🏛️ A Little History

Emperor Tiberius ruled Rome from Villa Jovis on Capri's eastern cliff for a decade. The island was the empire's most scandalous address. Rediscovered by 19th-century artists and aesthetes, it's been the Mediterranean's celebrity green room ever since.

The Blue Grotto's glow is sunlight entering through an underwater opening beneath the tiny cave mouth. Romans knew it, and statues of sea gods were recovered from its floor. Boatmen still make you duck flat to row through the meter-high entrance.

Local Tips

  • Catch the earliest ferry you can stand. Capri belongs to whoever arrives before the tour groups, and the difference is a different island.
  • Ride the Monte Solaro chairlift from Anacapri. Twelve silent minutes to the island's roof, the whole bay at your feet.
  • Treat the Blue Grotto as a maybe. It is genuinely magical and genuinely a production: long queues, sea-state cancellations, a short visit. Go in with both truths.
  • Walk the Gardens of Augustus for the Faraglioni view, then take the boat circle of the island if the water is calm; Capri is best seen from sea level at least once.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a day trip to Capri enough?
Enough to fall for it: ferry over, funicular up, Anacapri and the chairlift, the gardens, a long lunch. Overnight is the upgrade; the island at 7 PM, emptied of day-trippers, is a different and better place.
Is the Blue Grotto worth it?
When the sea cooperates and the queue is sane, yes: the light really is that blue. On rough days it closes, and on peak days the wait can outlast the wonder. Have a plan B.
Which port do ferries leave from?
Molo Beverello in Naples for the fast boats; Sorrento runs a shorter crossing. Book the return leg early in high season.
Can you walk Capri?
The towns, yes, and beautifully; the funicular and buses handle the climbs. Comfortable shoes beat stylish ones on the lanes and stairs.
